FROM ONE JOB TO THE NEXT
The difference between the plan and the work is worth understanding.
Illustrative example — not real customer data or promised savings
| Job costs | Estimated | Actual |
|---|---|---|
| Labor | $2,000 | $2,400 |
| Materials | $1,000 | $1,100 |
| Gross margin | 40% | 30% |
Sample job revenue: $5,000. Gross margin = (revenue − labor − materials) ÷ revenue; overhead and other expenses excluded.
In this example, fitting and site preparation took more labor than estimated. Recording that difference gives the contractor a reason to review the labor allowance on a similar future job.
A suggestion to review — not an automatic price change.
